Who was Josemaria Escriva, the founder of Opus Dei?
St Josemaria Escriva was a priest who was born in Barbastro (Spain) in 1902. In 1928 he founded Opus Dei, an institution within the Catholic Church which aims to spread the universal call to holiness through work and in everyday life. St Josemaria died in Rome in 1975. John Paul II proclaimed him a saint in a canonization ceremony in St Peter’s Square, Rome, on October 6 2002, before a crowd of hundreds of thousands of people from more than 80 countries
