A close-up portrait
February 22, 2011

Cardinal Julian Herranz
Cardinal Herranz says, “Most of the things I’ve written here are things I made a note of on the very day they happened. So in a way, these pages are a sort of blog for those years of my life.”
The result is a close-up portrait of Josemaria Escriva. Herranz’s lively, readable account, published in Spanish by Ediciones Rialp, reflects St Josemaria’s character and inner struggles, the way he headed Opus Dei, his ideas on justice and freedom. The book is an indispensable help in getting to know St Josemaria, canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002.

Ordained a priest in 1955, he holds doctorates in canon law and medicine. He was called to the service of the Holy See, and was an expert at the Second Vatican Council. John Paul II ordained him a Bishop in 1991. He was President of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts from 1994 to 2007. A member of several Congregations and other organisms of the Holy See, he was made a cardinal in 2003.
